MY NAME IS CONOR P. MCLAUGHLIN. I use he and they series pronouns.
"Leadership, not leaders" situates leadership as a practice rather than an identity. If we were to shift conceptualize leadership as something one does, we begin to orient leadership research, teaching, and action toward ongoing growth and learning instead of amassing and hoarding power or authority. Anyone can practice leadership, from any place in a group or organization, with or without positions of authority.
Working in higher education to co-create spaces where all can access their highest potential for leadership, social change, and justice. 15+ years experience training, hiring, supervising, mentoring, and developing leadership capacity in thousands students and staff in higher education. Currently working as a Staff Learning and Development Specialist to offer DEI training and development to more than 2,000 staff at a large public university in California on unceded Kumeyaay territory.
I CURRENTLY SERVE AS the Staff learning and development specialist in the center for inclusive excellence at san diego state university. I provide justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion oriented professional development to all staff across the university. I also work on the Faculty and Staff diversity team to implement SDSU's commitment to "equity in everything we do" through training, support, and service to the entire university community as well as the division of student affairs and campus diversity.
Previously i was a TEACHING PROFESSOR AT BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY (2018-2021) IN THE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHER EDUCATION AND STUDENT AFFAIRS. I taught CLASSES ON LEADERSHIP, COLLEGE STUDENT PERSONNEL, AND HIGHER EDUCATION ADMINISTRATION. I have also WORKED AT UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO (2013-2018), UC SAN DIEGO (2011-2013), SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY (2008-2011), AND AT CORNELL UNIVERSITY (2007-2008).
I RECEIVED A PHD IN LEADERSHIP STUDIES FROM UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO (2017), A MASTER OF ARTS IN ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP WITH A FOCUS IN HIGHER AND POST SECONDARY EDUCATION FROM TEACHERS COLLEGE, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY (2007), AND A BACHELOR OF ARTS IN PHILOSOPHY FROM CABRINI COLLEGE (2006), WHERE I RECEIVED THE PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT AWARD.
I ALSO HAVE A NUMBER OF PASSIONS THAT REACH BEYOND ACADEMIA; I AM CONSTANTLY INSPIRED BY MUSIC, MOVIES, COMIC BOOKS, HIKING THROUGH NATURE, MEDITATING, COOKING, AND PHOTOGRAPHY. I FIND THAT ENGAGING WITH THESE THINGS, EITHER BY DOING THEM OR TALKING TO OTHER PEOPLE ABOUT THEM, BRINGS ME A GREAT DEAL OF INSPIRATION AND ENERGY TO WHICH I APPLY TO MY TEACHING AND SCHOLARSHIP.
I AM FOREVER MAKING PROGRESS TOWARD A PERFECT CUP OF COFFEE.
